The State School System

The cantonal school system is widely represented in all the communes where you can find local schools and high schools. Children must attend the local school of the commune they reside in.

Education is organized and funded on a cantonal basis. The overall system is the same throughout the canton of Geneva, differing from other Cantons, even other French-speaking Cantons. Two characteristics in the Geneva public sector: children come home for lunch (but school restaurants are available) and school schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for Primary sections and Wednesdays morning in addition to these days for Secondary sections.

Dear participants,

To follow-up our email dated March 25 (see below) and our promise to get back to you with more information directed to different age groups, we discussed internally how parents could benefit the most from information on this complex school system and the upcoming changes (HarmoS).

We came to the conclusion that a special page on our website www.LemanEvents.ch with information about the Vaud school system linked to an “online panel” with experts, available all year long to answer your questions, would serve your needs the best.

We will use the coming months to set up this “online panel” with different disciplines and backgrounds.

With the start of the new school year we will have this special school page online.

We attached some information we received in English from the “Canton de Vaud”. Perhaps it is helpful to those who are in the process of making decisions now. If you know of someone who would like to be added to this special “school system” mailing list please ask him or her to send me an email.

We will keep you posted.

With kind regards.

Jos van Megchelen and Melania Quinn
